About Joni & Friends and For Charlotte for Joy Prom 2017

What is Joy Prom?

Joy Prom is a collaborative effort of churches in Charlotte who come together to host a full-scale prom for special needs individuals. This event is designed for ages 16 and older with developmental and/or physical impairments.

What happens at Joy Prom?

Formally-attired guests arrive on the red carpet and are escorted by volunteers who help show them a night of glitz & glamour including shoe shines and the photo booth. A dessert buffet is served for all guests and is followed by an evening of dancing the night away with their friends.

When and Where is it?

Joy Prom 2017 was held Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Carmel Baptist in Matthews, NC.

Why Joy Prom?

Joy Prom started as a small, one-night event 10 years ago at Carmel Baptist Church when the student ministry took Luke 14 literally and “threw a banquet” to invite those that could not “repay us.” As the event has grown, we have realized the catalytic opportunities that can occur when the church gathers together to love and serve the least of these. Volunteers are trained on disability ministry. Families are encouraged to participate, and churches have the opportunity to grow their own special needs ministries!

Why Churches?

A prom is a special night for participants and families. We want each person who walks in the door to feel loved and cared for. We want these same people to feel loved and cared for the rest of the year, not for just one night. We believe that the best way to accomplish that is to connect attendees to local churches in Charlotte.
